BMW N.A. has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and announced a voluntary recall of over 76,000 2012-2014 BMW 3 Series and 5 Series sedans, X1 and X3 crossovers and the Z4 roadster.

Which BMW models are affected by the recall?

Model year 2012-2014 BMW 320i/328i, 2014 328i xDrive Sports Wagon, 2012-13 528i 528i xDrive Sedan, 2013-14 X1 sDrive28i, 2013-14 X3 xDrive28i and the 2012-2013 BMW Z4 sDrive28i, equipped with either the N20 or N26 engine, manufactured from May 2012 through August 2013.

What causes the possible brake failure?

A restricted oil supply from the intake camshaft to the brake vacuum pump can cause the vacuum pump to fail, which can lead to a loss of power brake assist, resulting in possible brake failure. The hydraulic brakes will still function, but greater pedal pressure and a longer distance would be required to stop the vehicle.

Are there any known accidents attributed to the defect?

At this time, three minor accidents with no known injuries have been confirmed. BMW is advising those who encounter a braking problem to “pull the emergency brake and apply as much brake pedal pressure as possible,” and if your BMW is equipped with an electronic parking brake, to “pull up and hold the switch to engage the brake."

What do I do if my car is one of those affected?

BMW will be notifying all owners affected by the recall in November 2013. BMW will discontinue selling and delivering the affected models until all repairs have been performed.
