BMW N.A. has issued a recall of approximately 6,400 model year 2014 X5 vehicles due to possible faulty child safety rear door locks.
Which BMW models are affected by the recall?
Model year 2014 BMW F15 X5 vehicles equipped with the Soft Close Automatic (SCA) option, manufactured from December 12, 2013 to March 10, 2014.
What causes the faulty child safety locks?
The rear side door lock mechanisms may not have been manufactured correctly. If so, when the inside door handle is pulled, the engaged child safety lock may disengage. This would allow the rear seat occupant to pull the door handle twice and open the door, putting children at risk for injury.
Are there any known accidents attributed to the defect?
At this time, BMW is not aware of any accidents or injuries due to the related problem.
What do I do if my car is one of those affected?
BMW will be notifying all owners affected by the recall in May 2014. BMW will inspect and replace the rear door locks free of charge.
