BMW North America is issuing a recall of approximately 7,544 BMW vehicles due to a software glitch and possible electrical issue, which may cause front side marker lights to not illuminate.

Which BMW models are affected by the recall?

  • 2012-2015 BMW 320i, 320xi, 328i, 328xi, 335i, 335xi, and ActiveHybrid3 vehicles built between October 20, 2011 and June 22, 2015
  • 2014-2015 BMW 328xi Sports Wagon vehicles built between March 21, 2013 and March 17, 2015
  • 2014-2015 BMW 328d, 328xd vehicles built between June 28, 2013 and April 21, 2015
  • 2014-2015 BMW 328xd Sports Wagon vehicles built between July 5, 2013 and April 21, 2015

What causes the possible electrical issue of the front side marker lights?

From a June 15, 2015 software update, a flaw in the code that controls the front side marker lights may inadvertently make them stop illuminating in conjunction with the vehicle’s headlights. This can increase the risk of an accident because the vehicle may be harder to see at night or in low-visibility conditions.

Are there any known accidents attributed to the defect?

At this time, BMW is not aware of any accidents or injuries due to the related problem.

What do I do if my car is one of those affected?

BMW will begin notifying all owners affected by the recall by October 9, 2015. New software will be installed on the affected vehicles at no charge.
